WOW, I can't believe it has been so long since I last posted. With the start of a new year, I will try to do a better job of posting what the gallery is doing. William Alther actually joined us in the later part of 2010. He has always been drawn to art and animals which led to a degree in Wildlife BIology and a position at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Throughout, William was an active artist and in 2004 he left the museum to paint full-time. The natural world continues to be his cheif inspiration, with landscapes and wildlife being his principal subjects. Please check out our website to see more of his wonderful work.

Won't you please welcome Guillermo Valentin to the Windrush Gallery. Guillermo was born in Michoacan, Mexico. He studied art at "Bellas Artes", Academy of Art in Baja, and continued his studies in San Miguel de Allenda. Guillermo says that most of his work incorporates indigenous women with no inhibitions, were he explores their beauty and strength. Michael Chesley Johnson has created another fabulous little field guide that you really need to look into, especially if you plan on coming to Sedona, AZ for a little plein air painting. The field guide has 34 pages full of useful tips and 27 black & white photos with maps. "First Second"

The Art Show Committee for "Cheyenne Frontier Days Western Art Show" has made a unanimous decision in naming Karen Cooper, a first time artist to the show, as next year’s poster artist. The chosen painting, as seen above, depicts a bronc rider coming straight out of the chute.

Karen Cooper is a pastel artist who works on black and uses the black and negative space to give her pastels a dramatic and unique look. Her show pieces can be seen on the website at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum under Western Art Show. Won't you please join us in congratulating Karen on this great honor! Don Tiller hails from Port Townsend, Washington and has been on an artistic journey since college. His recent work is primarily composed of interesting shapes and bold colors in acrylics. After traveling his entire life as an Army brat, Bill Wray began working in the animation business as a teenager. Bill went on to work in writing and drawing comic books, animation, and illustration. He is mostly known for his painting style on The Ren and Stimpy Show, his monthly strip in Mad Magazine, and his collaboration with Mike Migola on Hellboy Junior. Earlier this year, Karen Cooper took the "Gold Award" Dry Medium (First Place) at the Western Artist of America Museum Show 2009 for this outstanding pastel "Bronc Driver". Karen is one of only 24 artist members in the Western Artist of America, which is dedicated to America's Western heritage. Also, Karen just learned that she has been selected as one of only 63 artist in this years "Cheyenne Frontier Day 30th Annual Western Art Show" held at the Old West Museum in Cheyenne Wyoming July 22 - August 1, 2010. Please welcome Karen Cooper to our family of artist. Karen is an incredibale pastel artist from Santa Fe, NM. All of here works are accomplished with soft pastels on black pastel paper. Her subjects are partial images on the black paper relying heavily on the negative space to convey each composition and as you can see by these paintings her ability to convey a story with each piece is absolutely wonderful. You just have to stop by the gallery to appreciate her pastel pieces. They are truely one of a kind.

The title of this 25"x22" giclee on canvas by Patricia Dobson is "Pueblo Chiaroscuro". You might be interested to learn that the word Chiaroscuro is Italian for light-dark and is a term used in art for a contrast between light and dark. The term is usually applied to bold contrasts affecting a whole composition, but is also used by artists to produce a contrasts of light, not necessarily strong, to achieve a sense of volume in modeling three-dimensional objects. In this piece we have a grouping of San Ildefonso pottery c. 1825-1875 and a Navajo Germantown blanket c. 1890.

Artist Joe Garcia Stops By...........

Artist Joe Garcia stopped by the gallery last week with some new work, so I thought I would give you a sneak peek. In the past the gallery only carried Joe's wildlife watercolors but over the past year we have started carrying his oils of wildlife and now with the addition of these new pieces we have some very nice landscape paintings from the Sedona, AZ area. This first piece is titled "Boynton Canyon". The next one is taken in the same general area and it is titled "Canyon Shadows". There are several things nice about these pieces but my two favorites are Joe's color palette and composition.

Another favorite of ours is Joe's sketches of wildlife. In the past we have had sketches of a Bobcat, Buffalo, and Roadrunner. Joe has now given us a Grizzly and House Wren, as seen here.

So what ever your taste are, won't you stop in and have a peek at Joe Garcia's creations!

So What is "Plein Air" ?

Since the Windrush Gallery is becoming know for it's family of artist that work "Plein Air", I thought it would be helpful to provide a little info on the subject. So here we go......

From Wikipedia we learn: En plein air is a French expression which means "in the open air", and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors.

Even though artists have long painted outdoors, in the mid-19th century working in natural light became particularly important to the Barbizon school and Impressionism. The popularity of painting en plein air increased in the 1870s with the introduction of paints in tubes (resembling modern toothpaste tubes). Previously, each painter made their own paints by grinding and mixing dry pigment powders with linseed oil. The Newlyn School in England is considered another major proponent of the technique in the latter 19th century.

It was during this period that the "Box Easel", typically known as the French Box Easel, was invented. It is uncertain who developed it first, but these highly portable easels, with telescopic legs and built-in paint box and palette, made treks into the forest and up the hillsides less onerous. Still made today, they remain a popular choice even for home use since they fold up to the size of a brief case and thus are easy to store.

French Impressionist painters such as Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir advocated en plein air painting, and much of their work was done outdoors, in the diffuse light provided by a large white umbrella. In the second half of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth century in Russia, painters such as Vasily Polenov, Isaac Lavitan, Valentin Sero, Konstantin Korovin and I.E. Grabar were known for painting en plein air. American Impressionists, too, such as those of the Old Lyme school, were avid painters en plein air. American Impressionist painters noted for this style during this era included, Guy Rose, Robert William Wood, Mary Denil Morgan, John Gamble, and Arthur Hill Gilbert. The Canadian Group of Seven and Tom Thomson are examples of plein air advocates.

Last week I was visiting with one of our artist, Adele Earnshaw, and she asked if I had ever given any thought to having a blog site for the gallery. Having recently been introduced to some of our artist blog sites, I was very much intrigued with the notion of having a site where the gallery could interact with collectors, artist, and who knows what. So here we are!

We would like this to be a place where we can come together and share common interest, showcase artist, display new work, promote upcoming events, and anything else we can think of that will be of mutual interest. So come on in and enjoy and please let us know what you think.

Here are some of the newer pieces we have received over the past several months. The first one is titled "Treasure of Acoma" and is a Giclee Canvas by Patricia Dobson. The second one is titled "Red Rock Pass" and is an Oil by Bill Cramer. The final one is titled "Fly Away Home" and is an Oil by Adele Earnshaw.
